SUMMARY: A British satire on Charles Stanhope's Toleration Bill of 1789 which was an attempt to remove the yoke of religious obligations on persons seeking public office (cf. Test and Corporation Acts). Despite the fact that a person seeking a position in the clergy was bound by the same obligations, the clergy was opposed to passage of Stanhope's bill, as is shown in this image in which two bishops, standing on shore, prevent Stanhope and his "Ark," filled with three sacks bearing labels pertaining to the "Penal Laws," from landing.
