TITLE:  The patriot - dedicated to the freeholders of Middlesex CALL NUMBER:  PC 1 - 4284b (A size) [P&P] REPRODUCTION NUMBER:  LC-USZ62-45405 (b&w film copy neg.) RIGHTS INFORMATION:  No known restrictions on publication. SUMMARY:  One of several prints depicting John Wilkes and Henry Luttrell and the election for the seat in Middlesex. This print shows a statue of John Wilkes on a pedestal, holding a staff topped with a liberty cap; the winds of "Envy", "Malice", and "Detraction" blow about his head. Britannia, armed to defend Wilkes, stands at the base of the statue with her lion who is leaping at the Duke of Grafton who faces the statue with sword drawn, he bears the horns of cuckoldry. Standing next to Grafton is the Earl of Upper Ossory holding a serpent in his left hand, and apparently is the one who enjoyed the pleasures of Grafton's wife. Depicted in the background is Lord Bute's flight "To Dover" in a carriage closely attended by two servents. Also shown are the Princess of Wales, Lord Rochford, and, his faced "Eclips'd" by a curtain, George III. MEDIUM:  1 print : etching. CREATED/PUBLISHED:  [1769] NOTES: Title from item.
